Carrot Cake Bliss Balls

These carrot cake bliss balls are sweet, with a cinnamon flavour and a hint of heat from the ginger. The lemon zest on the outside adds a citrusy flavour. As they contain raw carrots, dates and walnuts, they are a healthy alternative to sweets or chocolates and contain lots of different vitamins. Carrots are a rich source of Beta carotene which can be converted into vitamin A in the body to help maintain healthy skin.

I am selling these delicious Bliss Balls. They can be posted or collected. You can get 10 balls for £12. Email me at judianne@quickhealthyfamilymeals.com

Apple Filo Pie

If you’re looking for a healthier dessert option…this is it. Sweetened with only the apples and the raisins. It’s tart, sweet and has a light crunchy topping. The apples contain lots of fibre, which most people should be eating more of and this is a delicious way to add some to your diet.

Bolognaise

I laughed out loud in the supermarket last week….. Little boy to mum…”Who doesn’t love bacon?” She replied “Vegans”
So……. Who doesn’t love Spaghetti Bolognaise? 😉

This Bolognaise is made with tomatoes, carrots, onions and mushrooms, so contains lots of veggies and it freezes brilliantly too.

Full of iron from the beef. Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, which helps your red blood cells carry oxygen around your body.

On my Mac-Nutrition course I’ve been learning that the links between red meat and heart disease are often overstated. Most research is done on BOTH red meat and processed meat and it’s the processed meat that is bad for your health. If you are healthy and eat a varied diet rich in natural foods, red meat is high in iron and other important nutrients. So make this Bolognaise!

Mushroom, Spinach and Lentil Strudel

This strudel is totally delicious. It contains protein from the lentils, 3 different veggies – onions, mushroom and spinach and is full of flavour. I sometimes add feta too, which adds a creamy, salty flavour that complements the vegetables really well.
I made this video in a makeshift kitchen (as ours was being renovated) – which shows how easy it is!

Trans Fatty Acids

What are TFAs?
Trans Fatty Acids are (primarily) man made fats that significantly increase your risk of getting Coronary Heart Disease.

They are made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oils, so you will see them on food labels as partially hydrogenated vegetable oil or hydrogenated vegetable oil.

They don’t go off, so they are added to foods to extend their shelf life but they are not good for your health and it is advisable to remove them from your diet completely.

They are found in margarine, fried foods, pastries, highly processed foods/snacks e.g chips etc.

What to have instead?
Try to replace trans fatty acids with polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats, both of which have been shown to lower your risk of getting Coronary Heart Disease.

You will find them in foods such as nuts, seeds, olives, flaxseeds, eggs, quinoa, avocado, olive oil, sesame oil and fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel etc.

How?

Avoid eating highly processed foods and check food labels

Try adding seeds and nuts to your salads, eat more fish, add avocado to your egg on toast, add ground flaxseeds to your cakes (no one will notice) swap processed biscuits or cake for a handful of nuts

Recipes
Here are some quick healthy recipes that will boost your monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and help decrease your risk of coronary heart disease.

Orange and Basil Chicken

I loved this summery Mediterranean tasting ORANGE & BASIL ROAST CHICKEN. It was a marmite recipe…. loved by half of us, not by the other half 🤷‍♀️ The chicken tasted of basil and garlic and the sauce was bitter and orangey. Yum. If you make it, I’d love to know what your family think!

Chocolate and Banana Cake

Have you got some overripe bananas that no one will eat? Use them up by making this Chocolate and Banana Cake. Becoming overripe doesn’t affect the potassium, which helps to lower blood pressure and keep your heart healthy. This cake contains 75 -100g dark chocolate chips, which I wouldn’t normally add but my kids said it needed to be a bit sweeter, so I took note! It’s really easy, quick to make and doesn’t last very long!

Chicken Shwarma

Chicken Shwarma Fakeaway! This super easy recipe was created by a chef called Israel Scherrer and given to me by my friend Dalia. I’ve tweaked it and made it quite a bit healthier – made with curry powder, garam masala, olive oil and chicken stock powder – try it! It tastes great.
